Health journeys are rarely easy, especially when a diagnosis changes the way we live. Yet, some of the most inspiring stories come from people who choose to adapt rather than deny their reality.
Years ago, while hiking in Hawaii, I met a man with insulin-dependent diabetes. Despite the risks, he completed a five- to six-mile hike by consistently monitoring his blood sugar, taking small insulin doses when needed, and carrying food for safety. What struck me was his complete acceptance of his condition. He didn’t ignore it or let it hold him back—he surrendered to it and lived within its boundaries, which allowed him to keep enjoying life.
On the other hand, some patients struggle with surrender. One ignored the adjustments needed after receiving a pacemaker, and another avoided seeking help when atrial fibrillation developed. In both cases, resistance led to unnecessary complications.
That’s why two final chapters of my book, Healing When It Seems Impossible, are titled Trust the Process and Never Give Up. Trusting the process means accepting your journey, even if it’s not what you hoped for. Never giving up means continuing to find joy and purpose, despite limitations.
My own story reflects this balance. After a car accident and knee pain, I had to let go of skiing. Instead, I discovered ballroom dancing—a way to move joyfully while honoring my body’s needs.
The lesson is clear: ignoring health conditions only worsens them, but surrendering allows you to adapt and thrive. Acceptance does not mean weakness—it means strength, resilience, and wisdom.
Final Thoughts
Surrender is not about giving up. It’s about finding new ways to live fully within the limits of your body, while holding onto joy and purpose.
“Surrendering doesn’t mean stopping your life—it means living fully within your limits.”
