Why You Should Consider Taking Supplements: A Guide to Being Supplement Smart

Hello everyone,
This is Dr. Shiroko Sokitch.

I’m excited to kick off a series dedicated to a topic that many people are curious about but often find confusing: Supplements. Today, I want to delve into why you should consider incorporating supplements into your daily routine and help you become more supplement-smart.

Understanding the Role of Supplements

Many of us buy supplements without fully understanding what they do or why we need them. This series aims to clear up some of that confusion. In today’s post, I’ll explore the primary reasons people take supplements and provide some guidance on how to choose the right ones for your needs.

Reason 1: Maintenance – Filling Nutritional Gaps

The first and perhaps most common reason people take supplements is to fill nutritional gaps in their diet. Modern farming practices, soil depletion, and the long supply chains our food goes through mean that even the healthiest diets can lack certain essential nutrients.

Even if you shop at high-quality stores like Good Earth, Whole Foods, or Oliver’s, and buy the freshest produce available, the nutrient content may still be lower than it should be. Factors such as prolonged exposure to light and water can degrade the vitamin content of vegetables, even in the best conditions.

The best way to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients you need is to grow your own food, using organic soil and harvesting at the peak of freshness. However, this isn’t realistic for everyone. The next best option is to purchase fresh produce from a local farmer’s market, ideally consuming it on the same day. But again, this isn’t always possible, and that’s where supplements come in. A good multivitamin, omega-3 fatty acids, and other essential nutrients can help bridge the gap, ensuring your body gets what it needs to function optimally.

Reason 2: Health Condition – Supporting Recovery

Another critical reason to take supplements is to support your body through specific health conditions. The supplement industry is vast, offering products that cater to a wide range of health needs—from digestive issues to hormonal imbalances and chronic diseases.

Many supplements have been researched and proven to help the body recover or manage symptoms of certain conditions. For example, if you’re dealing with digestive problems, a probiotic might be just what you need to restore balance. If you’re recovering from surgery or an injury, certain supplements can support the healing process, helping your body repair tissue more efficiently.

Reason 3: Preventive Care – Staying Ahead of Illness

Finally, supplements can play a significant role in preventive care, helping you stay ahead of potential health issues. Whether you have a family history of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, or high cholesterol, taking preventive supplements can reduce your risk of developing these conditions.

Preventive supplements aren’t just about avoiding illness; they’re also about promoting vibrant aging. As we get older, our bodies naturally require more support to maintain energy levels, cognitive function, and overall health. Supplements tailored to these needs can help ensure that you age healthily and vibrantly.

💡 Additional Reasons to Consider Supplements

Beyond these three primary reasons, there are other benefits to consider:

  • Enhancing Mental Clarity and Focus: Supplements like omega-3 fatty acids can support brain health and improve cognitive function.
  • Improving Sleep Quality: Supplements such as melatonin or magnesium can help regulate sleep patterns and improve sleep quality.
  • Supporting Digestive Health: Probiotics and digestive enzymes can promote gut health and improve nutrient absorption.
  • Aiding in Detoxification: Supplements like milk thistle can support liver function, helping your body detoxify more effectively.

Conclusion

To sum up, there are several compelling reasons to incorporate supplements into your daily routine—whether it’s for maintenance, recovery, or preventive care. The key is to choose high-quality supplements that meet your specific needs.

In my next live session, I’ll dive deeper into what makes a supplement “good” and how to identify the best quality products on the market. Until then, take a moment to evaluate your current health and dietary habits, and consider how supplements might support your overall well-being.
